Humans are inherently solitary beings, much like the allegory Plato wrote over two thousand years ago: each person is an incomplete entity split into two halves, spending a lifetime searching for the other half, yet not always finding it, as there are too many split individuals. Sometimes you think you've found it, and sometimes you believe you'll never find it. In "The Symposium," Plato used this remarkable allegory to illustrate that loneliness is an intrinsic part of human nature.
[ MOTIVATION ]
This project was an invitation to join a startup fragrance company based in Shanghai. They invited me to design the bottle and other visual elements for their main product, a slogan perfume. The brand's positioning is quite unique, aiming to capture the contemporary youth's sense of uncertainty about the present and their desire to understand themselves through various slogans. They believed that my background in philosophy and design was perfectly suited for this project, so we embarked on a collaboration that lasted over a year.
[ SOLUTION ]
Since my design style leans towards minimalism, I aimed to use a complete surface and simple geometric shapes to carve out a state of perfect imperfection, embodying a split, halved sphere. I hoped this form would echo Plato's understanding of the essence of human loneliness as described in his works. Additionally, I intended for this design to convey a meaning that is straightforward and concise yet, upon closer examination, deeply significant.
